Should I Repair or Replace my broken appliance?
This is one of the most commonly asked questions we see. Should I repair or should I replace my fridge (or washing machine, stove, dryer, etc)?
The answer isn’t going to be the same in every situation, but we can let you know how we dive in to your details to answer that question.
When deciding to repair or replace, there are 4 main questions we like to ask our customers to make sure they are making the right choice for their situation.
1. How old is the appliance?
Honestly, it usually isn’t worth it to fix the 25 year old oven that came with the house you bought, but if you have a 5-10 year old oven, you should absolutely look into repairing it over replacing it.
One major thing to consider when asking if you should repair or replace, is are the proper parts going to be available? And at what cost? Parts for recent appliances are easily accessible via the product maker or 3rd party part suppliers, but parts for something built in 20-30 years ago might not be readily available. If you have something special to you break, such as your grandma’s oven you used to use together, we can absolutely see what we can do to get it working for you, but for most situations it is better to replace something that old, as the next repair might be just around the corner.
With all of that being said, anything in the last 5-15 years (depending on the appliance) is absolutely worth looking into repairing. Parts can usually be obtained much cheaper than replacement, plus the rest of the appliance usually still has some life in it.
2. Do you like the appliance?
Does it fit perfectly with your kitchen? Have you grown comfortable with how it works and looks? If so, don’t trash it, fix your broken appliance!
Why take the risk to spend MORE to buy something you might hate? If you like the broken appliance you have, lets see if we can get it working for you.
On the other side, if you hate the appliance, or if the rest of your appliances are stainless steel and your dishwasher is still vinyl white, maybe look into replacing it, if you have the means to do so. This brings us to the 3rd question.
3. What is your situation?
Do you have the means to go and replace your appliances? Do you have a budget saved up to go and buy new matching appliances? If so, now could be the time to upgrade your home with new appliances .
We know most people don’t have brand new appliances budgeted when things break down, so most of the time it makes more sense to repair what you have, but if you were ready to buy an all new kitchen appliance set, or washer and dryer anyway, why not do it now?
4. What do you want to do?
Ultimately, it comes down to your choice. We can repair most appliances cheaper than any replacement (usually by a LOT), but if your heart says you need to upgrade to that brand new oven/stove, we support your choice!
However if you feel you want to save some time and money, and just have us fix what you have, we will happily work to make it happen for you.
At the end of the day, we always want to do right by you.
